Sustainability Reporting, Measurement, and Metrics

Advancing Sustainability in the Hospitality Industry

Sustainability Reporting

By definition from the GRI, sustainability reporting is “The practice of measuring, disclosing, and being accountable for organizational performance while working towards the goal of sustainable development.”

A sustainability report it is a periodic report which discloses an organization’s approach and performance, encompassing relevant topics within the broad sustainability spectrum, and with the timeliness and seriousness of an annual report. Relevance ultimately depends on the audience: the company’s stakeholders.

Industry Issues

·        Who are the most important stakeholders to the industry, and how does this differ from the stakeholders who most read sustainability reports?

·        Which sustainability issues are most material to the hospitality industry? What needs collective collaboration to address?

·        Where are the boundaries drawn when considering control, given the business models of hotel companies?

·        How should the reporting process be approached within a company?

·        How often should reports be produced, and how? Should they be integrated into annual reports, or should they be blended with CSR reports?

·        How will trends in sustainability reporting impact the hotel industry?

·        What are the opportunities and risks of Climate Change, and how should those be reported?
